Bringing Love and Hope into the Conversation by Elektra Porzel
Humans have traditionally found ways to remind themselves and their communities that love and hope exist in these dark times. In our ancestors’ time, that meant that it was cold and dark and maybe the food supply was limited. They lived in small communities or tribes. So when the Winter Solstice arrived, they celebrated the return of longer days which meant the days of abundance of new life were coming. Each culture had their own rituals and traditions and they all included feasting together in community. In Europe they blest their homes with Yule logs. They exchanged gifts. They hoped for a time of food abundance. They burnt fires and candles to chase away the dark.
We think that we are in dark times now and we are. In the United States, we have leadership that flaunts the rule of law and the constitution. Many fear not just the degraded government of the United States but more personally they fear that they won’t have enough money to pay for food or for health care. We see others as ‘the other’, separate from us. Race, religion, politics divide us.
I suggest that we copy our ancestors’ traditions and re-institute rituals of love and hope such as they had. Feed others so that the least of us are cared for. Purposely share meals with others focusing on loving them as they are, not what you fear that they think or act as. In love, bless your home. Clean it in preparation for the Winter Solstice. Care for the larger community around you…cleaning up trash, assisting the elders in getting around, in the spring plant flowers.
The Winter Solstice marks the beginning of the return of the sun. It’s celebrated on Dec. 21st this year. Give yourself some stillness time to renew your love of Self. Write some Creation Exercises and Observing Exercises. Be present to what is occurring within and around yourself. Be with others in community…visit a community event, light show or festival. Look for the moments of unity, of shared love and hope.
As we experience longer days, we will also know the inevitability of coming spring and change. Our earth is recognizing these shifts. Join her in love and hope and see how much practicing being love and hope increases your experience of coherence as part of your daily thinking and being. These practices can change our inner frequencies into attractors of life-enhancing energies and that will make all the difference in our mutual efforts to create a better world for all.
