For Love with Horse by Claudia Jones

My relationship with Horse has existed both in their physical presence and on a deep energetic level. On my desk is a photograph of me at four years old, sitting on the back of a horse for the first time. The smile on my face says a thousand things. So does my hand placed on the horse’s withers in an irresistible urge to complete the contact. Pure joy! That photograph captures the beginning of what would become a lifelong journey with Horse for me.

To shed a bit more light on the beginnings of my relationship with Horse, a story: when I was little there was a piece of property in our neighborhood that we called The Pony Pasture. A man kept about a dozen ponies there and my best friend and I had free access to any of them. How that was arranged I have no recall except that it was surely part of the magic of Horse for me. I chose a black and white Pinto Pony and named him Apache. I loved him dearly. Having no formal training or anything but a child’s trust and athletic ability, Apache agreed to give himself to me in partnership. We covered entire landscapes together without boundaries. With him, I not only became an adept rider, but experienced a shared field of being together in trust, willingness, and a mutual yes. This is one of the profound beauties of Horse. Their energetic field meets us where we are and allows us to grow in ways we never expected. Apache and I were partners for a few wonderful years.

It was in third/fourth grade that my sister and I got our first horse, Cricket. Cricket was probably one of the biggest and most profound teachers I’ve ever had. I am still learning from her. She gave more than any creature should be expected to give and I firmly believe she saw me more clearly than I saw myself. In fact, I am just now realizing that as of this writing. What a perfect example of how Horse’s intelligence invites, even prods, us to live in greater congruence with ourselves.

In the months ahead, as we enter the Year of the Fire Horse, I stand not as an expert about Horse, but as an access point to Horse frequency. I will lead a monthly series on Horse: It’s Gifts and its Challenges that starts on Saturday Feb 21st at 8amPT. My role in this discussion is not to teach or prescribe meanings, but to open a space of inquiry – one that allows participants to listen, feel, and notice what Horse stirs within their own lives.

For me, Horse has always been a doorway—into freedom, into presence, and into a deeper relationship with life itself. I was born in the Year of the Horse, and this moment feels like a natural threshold. The upcoming conversation is an offering from within that field. If something in you stirs as you read this, Horse may already be speaking to you.
