Why the Interest in Consciousness? by Elektra Porzel
What is consciousness anyway? To be conscious, is it just the state of being awake to sensory input of this 3D world? In a reality where we are raised to give authority to sources outside of us, how can we get to know that sensing system within us? Or is this search for ‘higher’ states of ‘consciousness’ just another escape from our bodies? What is this drive for increasing our level of consciousness? Does it mean that we want to sense into the larger forces that are not ‘in form’? ‘Nearer my God to thee’ comes to mind as a goal phrase for this desire to be in a conscious connection to their larger Being, to larger dimensional forces and to the Divine, to that which created them.
What is the why to this seeking? Is it supposed to reunite us with our Source? Or is it the same inane running towards the spiritual as the only high value and away from the body as something low and not to be listened to? Could it be a seeking for a unity of body and spirit? An embodiment of Spirit within our form. My sense is that it is a search for the unity point at which our Spirit can truly do the work that it came to do on earth. So, expanding our Consciousness is a both/and experience. It requires that we know how our body communicates to us. It requires that we take the appropriate measures to help our bodies to deal with this reality of separation. It’s the turning away from the mental mind as the only interpreter of life experience and of body experience. It’s the opening up to the larger reality of unity of which we are a part. It is both body and Spirit working together.
How do you experience those other levels of consciousness? One truth for me is that I first must become conscious of how my own body systems talk to me, which is my sentient intelligence. Without that intelligence, I am operating with no sensors like a car with no headlights in the black of night. Knowing how my body communicates to me allows me to pay attention to subtle messages of ‘Yeah!!!/Nay! for me in the moment’. When I was a healer, I would listen to my sentient intelligence and that of my client’s body, to guide me in my next step in helping their body heal. I didn’t have to plan my protocol for working with them, instead I was directed by both systems’ sentient intelligence in the moment.
Sentient Intelligence is the resonant language of creation that bonds all that exists into one cohesive whole. This is the intelligence that, when picked up on, allows all of life to be a sensual, engaging, vital, and connected experience. We experience our sentient intelligence through sensation, sensitivity and imagination, as sensations, energies running thru us. Sentient Intelligence is a natural part of us. It is an inherent intelligence like nature. You probably have already experienced some of them. There may be indicators of stress like a feeling of being sucker-punched, a sinking feeling in your stomach, feeling sudden chills, or an indicator of good experiences such as ‘yes this is right’, a sense of elation or an intuitive nudge. It informs us what is occurring both internally and externally 24/7.
It’s an innate intelligence that speaks to us often. Unfortunately, most of us were not trained to pay attention to it. We were trained by our families, our churches, our cultures to listen to their advice and ignore our body’s messaging. Consequently, as adults, we often ignore those messages from our physical intelligence. People don’t have access to themselves. We have access only to what they have heard from outside sources.
So this search for what consciousness requires first that we get familiar, even intimate, with our Sentient Intelligence. This practice gives us the knowing of what is our next step and which path is ours to take. It is the drive to reunite our Spirit with our body. Many of us feel that we have a larger purpose for coming into earth for this human life. So, this drive for a more conscious consciousness seems to be part of that drive to rediscover our larger Being and our larger purpose.
There is so much to unpack about consciousness. Please join Sahere Hum and Elektra Porzel as we lead a discussion of unpacking consciousness in the Tools to Thrive webinar on Wednesday, June 20th at 5:30pmPT. It’s a free 90 minute Zoom call.
